Art: The Dream of Fire; PG (body damage)

Warning: Largish image!

Castiel encounters Dean in Hell.

The thing is, I have zero interest in Castiel or any of the other angels as looking like human beings with wings pastede on. And I have a lot of headcanon about the SPN angels, starting with the belief that they don't actually have wings, and that the shapes in the shadows that we see are really just expressions of multidimensional energy lifeforms being crammed into four-dimensional spacetime and squeezed. So that's why they look like that. They're expressing something far more complex and impossible to conceptualize.

This image here owes a lot to different stuff. The most obvious is the similarity to the Ohmu in Nausicaa. And also I was trying to get a sea-creature look, because life in the oceans is so much older than life on land. Also I tried to sneak in some elements from all the other trueform!Cas pics I've done, though sometimes only in terms of concept rather than image.

Above all else, I like to imagine the angels as constantly shifting form, depending on mood and environment and whatever else. So that's why I try to avoid repeating appearances. And that's why there are all these random lines all over the place. Well, that, and I like the idea that all those lines--every single one--are words. Because the thing about mystical traditions, in both East and West, is the significance of words. You find a lot of focus on the written word in eastern traditions, which is why I tried to give the sense of some strange banners or scrolls being attached to the angel's physical form here. But overall I like the idea that the waveparticles making up an angel are individually crafted vibrations, syllables of pure creation. Because how awesome would that be?

The look Dean sports here I lifted directly from my other Hell!Dean pic The biggest thing about it, to me, is that I thought it would be neat if the souls in Hell all got their eyes torn out. So it isn't that he has black eyes here, it's that he has no eyes. And no eyelashes, and the 'flesh' around his sockets is damaged and scarred.

While I actually like the whole man with wings thing, this is rather an awesome set of waveform interpretations (let alone the sad, creepy, awful Frankenstein-esque Hell!Dean).

This one in particular reminds me of a drawing I found and have been using elsewhere as an icon but of course I can't find it now :-(

Heh, thanks! And it's not that the winged-guy thing doesn't have it's place (but that also raises the issue that afaik there's no mention anywhere in the bible of them having wings and that's just an artistic convention) it's just that personally it doesn't interest me nearly as much as the other possibilities. Glad you enjoyed my interpretation, anyway. Thanks so much!

If you find the pic in question, shoot me a link! I'd love to see it. :)

I found a different one - http://www.freud.org.uk/file-uploads/small/Opium_Dreams_1.jpg which actually looks a bit like an Aubrey Beardsley (though it isn't, it's by a Hungarian artist, Attila Sassy).

Oh yeah, okay, I've seen similar styles before, though not this image in particular. Bu yeah, it does have those types of lines. I'm glad you showed me that, frankly my art leaves me scratching my head a lot so it's nice to see that there might be other similar styles out there.;)

Oh wow that's fascinating, beautiful in a horrific sort of way.

The best combination of words! (I also kinda like the idea of horrible things being weirdly beautiful. <3)

Thanks so much! I really just draw these for the trueform stuff; Dean's just kinda there so I can still say it's spn art. ;)

You had me at "Body Damage." I love your lacy linework and gorgeous decorative treatment on the angel and on Dean's Frankensteinian stitchery.

We need some Sam now. Yeah, I said "need." And "we". Selfish? Nah. ;)

Heh, if Sam wants to become an angel then I'll consider drawing him. I mean seriously, the last 4 or 5 pics I've done have been an excuse to do trueform stuff. I suppose I could hae a go at Gabriel, but I don't ship Sabriel and anyway Gabe's an archangel and taht sounds like a ridiculous amount of work to me.

Glad you liked it! This sort of thing is fun just because the angels are so open to interpretation. And I do love me some teeny-tiny lines. Thanks so much!

I LOVE what you did/your interpretation of the eyes, and also, you have such an awesome, awesome style. <333

Hell!Dean is so interesting to me because there's so much room for interpretation. I just really wanted to make the one from the other pic do...stuff. I dunno. Then I felt kinda lazy for not coming up with something new but I love the eyes thing! And the embedded hook. Mmmm.

Glad you like my weird style! And thank you so much!

Your style is very unique and is always so darkly beautiful!
And those are some interesting concepts, you give so much thoughts into this :)

I'm fasscinated by the angels, and in my head classify them as more science fiction than supernatural entity. There's a lot of storytelling potential there. It's awesome!

Glad you enjoyed this! My style is defiitely unique, 'cuz I don't know how to draw like the famous peoples. Glad it works for you and thank you so much!

Before I read the pic description I immedietly thought of nausicaa. i loved that you drew inspiration from there, as that manga is absolutely beautiful. Your Dean is really captivating as well.

Oh man, I am such a Nausicaa fan you have no idea. God. So much love, especially for the manga. And the Ohmu are such a bundle of complex ideas, not least of which is that something can be beautiful in ways we can't understand.

Glad you like Dean here, too. Hell!Dean is another idea ripe with possibilities for interpretation. So glad you enjoyed this, and thank you so much!

I'm stunned. This is incredibly beautiful, great composition, and I love your interpretation of trueform!Cas. Dean in hell is reminiscent of the Hellraiser Cenobites, which is just fantastic. Well done on this.

Wow, thank you so much! I've never actually seen Hellraiser, but I'm at least passingly familiar with the Cenobites--I did go and look them up though and now I guess I have to see the movie. It's certainly a flattering comparison, and I'm so glad you enjoyed this!

I'm thrilled you're not offended by the comparison- it's all in the beauty of the grotesque, or as Clive Barker termed it, repulsive glamour. Your art is gorgeously macabre. I love it!

I'm only a little familiar with this fandom, but enough to think it's awesome what you've done with Castiel here. It's really gorgeous and evocative.

I like to be sneaky with my art and not have it look too much like the actual characters so I can do weird stuff with 'em. And the angels are so interesting to me, and the possibilities pretty much limitless. I'm so happy you enjoyed the interpretation and that it worked for you despite not knowing the source material that well--that's the best sort of compliment imho. Thank you so much!

I love how scary and powerful and just plain beyond understanding your trueform!Cas seems. It's a terrifying vision and absolutely stunning work!

'Beyond understanding' was definitely what I was aiming for! I'm glad that came through. I even tried to avoid mammalian features and just make the design really other. I love the fact that no matter how you look at it, Dean's closest non-family relationship is with this inhuman stranger. I'm so glad you liked the way it came out. Thank you so much!

So much this! Exactly this! I love trueform!Cas (or other angels) depicted in some sort of ever-changing, incomprehensible shiftiing images. I like to think that we (audience/humans/Dean/Sam) see the wings b/c that's the only way our brains can make sense of it. And maybe your eyes burn out not from the sheer brightness/beauty of the sight, but to actually protect your brain from being completely scrambled by something it can't ever possibly understand (and that's why Dean can't remember being saved by Cas).

I especially love your use of "words" here and the power they hold. This is gorgeous, detailed work. I definitely have to go look at your other stuff.

Oh thank god I'm not the only one. I mean there's lots of amazing Castiel art out there and I love the actor, of course, but the most interesting thing about them, to me, is their nonhuman quality. Actually what I really need to do is look up those ancient ancient life forms--the ones that look nothing like modern life because 99% were wiped out in the first mass extinction. I mean those things were *weird* and if angels were going to look like anything earthly, it should probably be those guys.

I'm glad you enjoyed this! SPN art these days is just an excuse for me to draw weird angel stuff. I've got quite a few of those scattered around here, so I hope you find something else you enjoy! Thank you so much for your kind words!

Excellent! I definitely envision them as, like, giant sea creatures or aliens (which are often based on either sea creatures or insects) or there was this one fic that described Cas's true form as sort of mechanical with gears and eyeballs.

One I just read recently portrayed the angels as all very different looking, as though their outward appearance reflected their individual purposes. (I found it! It's glorious http://balder12.livejournal.com/876.html)

I actually remember reading that! It was pretty interesting. And I love the eyeballs thing--the first trueform!Cas pic I did has lots!

Of course, because of our earlier conversation I wound up writing 3700 words this afternoon of Gabriel traveling through the ages of earth's history starting 655 mya. It's not finished yet, but that's a lot of words and now my head hurts.

It's sort of...science fiction meta. I'm just trying to figure out how to end it.

Wow!

Hey, thanks so much! I love monstrous versions of the angels, so this was a lot of fun to do. Glad you liked it!
